Anonymity, group size, and proximity all influence
participation and communication in CMC groups. They each play different roles,
but all are involved when it comes to CMC groups. Anonymity helps with people not exactly knowing who each
other is. This is useful for people that might be afraid to voice their ideas
and opinions in fear that others might make fun of them or criticize them for
it. So with it being anonymous, it helps to make it so that everyone gives
input and feels safe talking. The bigger
the groups the better for CMC. With larger numbers of people and diversity,
there is more input and lots of great ideas from everyone. Everyone can put in
their two sense and others will listen to what they have to say(or read). The book mentions that, “physical proximity
of group members interacts with the communication medium to influence the
groups CMC”. This means that it’s not just the technology that we use to
communicate with others, but the overall contextual cues
that influence the groups communication with others. All of them are
important influences for participation and communication in CMC groups.
