One thing that I found interesting this week was the group
communication functions. These functions can help a group choose and
appropriate medium. The book divided
them into eight types, they are:
1.
Planning functions, such as the development of
group agendas, goals, and objectives
2.
Functions requiring creativity and the
generation of ideas
3.
Intellectual functions, such as problem solving
4.
Decision-making functions
5.
Cognitive-conflict functions, such as resolving
conflicting points of view
6.
Mixed-motive functions that require group
conflict resolution
7.
Competitive functions that involve issues of
power and status
8.
Performance functions when a group implements
the project
Each function had a different richness and is preformed
differently. The book mentions that text-based CMC groups perform better that
f2f groups on idea-generation functions and I would have to agree with that. It
seems like whenever I have been in a face to face group, coming up with ideas
can be hard since no one wants their idea to be overlooked or dumb. It also
mentions that f2f groups are better with intellectual functions that CMC
groups. Each function is different and can be preformed better than a different
group.
