In regards to making
public presentation, there are a few formats that groups use for the
presentation. The four formats are forum, panel, colloquium, and symposium.
The Forum- A format
that provides a layout for speaking and listening to a larger audience.
The Panel- A public format in which a group of 4 to 8
experts discuss a problem or decision in front of an audience.
The Colloquium- A form of public discussion in which a group
of 3 to 6 experts, usually chosen for their divergent views, discuss a problem,
following the problem solving format, in from of an audience with a moderator facilitating
their interactions.
The Symposium- A format for a series of 2 to 6 brief
speeches made on different aspects of a complex and difficult problem.
I prefer the panel format out of all the formats. I think
that listening to a group of experts discuss a problem is interesting. It also
involves a moderator who starts the meeting. It is mentioned that it sometimes
involves an informal, humorous, style of interaction to keep the audience’s attention
and share the information. It also provides no direct interaction with the
panel and audience, which can be a good thing.
All of the formats are interesting and it would be fun to participate in
each one.
I chose symposium as my preferred method but it is tied with a panel for the reasons you mentioned. I like that they both are centered around experts. Education is so important when a decision is being made. Not just for the people who deliberate but for the stakeholders of the situation. Imagine if we all voted for the president without ever hearing what experts had to say about the issues at stake? it would shrink our voice. I also like the idea of humor. Finding some fun in the things we make a fuss over can be humbling and insightful. It would be hard to choose between the two if I had too. Good post.
